Exhibition Fashioning the Digital Body ▾

This exhibition presents practice-based doctoral research by Yimiao Dai. It explores how digital bodies can be created, reshaped, and reimagined, and how new forms of fashion can emerge from them.

In digital environments, the body is no longer fixed. It can stretch, fragment, and transform beyond physical limits. This research introduces the concept of the Digital Fashioned Body—a body shaped through digital processes that becomes an active starting point for design rather than a passive form to be dressed.

The three interconnected projects presented here demonstrate how reimagining the body in digital space can expand the boundaries of fashion practice and material thinking.

Fashioning the
Digital Body

This exhibition presents practice-based doctoral research by Yimiao Dai. It explores how digital bodies can be created, reshaped, and reimagined, and how new forms of fashion can emerge from them.

In traditional fashion design, clothing is developed for stable physical human bodies. In digital environments, the body is no longer fixed. It can stretch, fragment, and transform beyond physical limits. Because the body shapes how garments are structured and draped, rethinking the body opens new possibilities for fashion design itself.

This research introduces the concept of the Digital Fashioned Body—a body shaped through digital processes that becomes an active starting point for design rather than a passive form to be dressed.

Through a series of experimental projects, the work explores how digitally generated body forms can produce new fashion outcomes: sculptural silhouettes, mannequins, avatars, hybrid garments, physical draping experiments, and installation pieces.

The three interconnected projects presented in this exhibition demonstrate how reimagining the body in digital space can expand the boundaries of fashion practice and material thinking.
